Artist Statement

Stephanie Nuñez (b. 2001)

The vibrant colors produced by oil painting and chalk pastel mediums reflect the subtropical climate and evoke the warmth associated with my cultural heritage. Having grown up in the Catholic faith that is increasingly diminishing in Latin America and worldwide, I perceive my work as a continuation of the struggle for authentic faith. This endeavor has its roots in the historical context of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, marked by the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the 16th century, and further highlighted during the Cristero War in the 20th century. My artistic expression serves as a response to contemporary skepticism and cynicism, viewing life as a precious gift and advocating for the belief in eternal life, as informed by Catholic teachings, while embracing the inevitability of mortality.

Recurrent themes in my work draw upon Day of the Dead imagery, Mexico-U.S. migration, my cultural heritage, and events from my lived experience. Through my artistic initiatives, I aim to celebrate and preserve these beliefs and cultural expressions, serving as a source of hope and a pursuit of purpose that transcends the conventional notion of the American Dream, embracing life in all its vibrant colors.
